Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the oldest departments in the Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli. It is established in 1955. Currently it is running one undergraduate program i.e. B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering with intake of 60 seats and three post graduate programs i.e. M. Tech in Mechanical-Production Engineering; program with intake of 30 seats, M. Tech in Mechanical - Heat Power Engineering; program with intake of 18 seats and M. Tech in Mechanical - Design Engineering; program with intake of 30 seats. Mechanical Engineering Department is also recognized as Research Centre for Doctoral Program. Students who wish to do Ph. D. are enrolled through Shivaji University, Kolhapur, AICTE‟s Quality Improvement Program (QIP) and AICTE‟s Doctoral Fellowship program (ADF). Currently 2 PhD candidates are enrolled through QIP and 6 candidates are pursuing PhD ADF Program.

The Mechanical Engineering Department is accredited by National Board of Accreditation i.e. NBA upto June 2022. The undergraduate program is accredited four times by NBA and the postgraduate programs are accredited three times by NBA. The department have highly qualified and experienced faculty members. About 60 % faculty members from department have doctorate degree. All faculty members are working in different research areas such as Design Engineering,

As our institute is autonomous, the curriculum is regularly updated as per needs of industry and also considering current research developments in mechanical engineering. For updating the curriculum committee is formed called as Board of Studies (BoS). BoS consists of all Faculty members, Industry representatives, University Representatives, Academician, Alumni, UG and PG students. BoS meeting were held once in the year.

Apart from regular B. Tech degree, student can also enrol to B. Tech (Hons) / B. Tech (Minor) with specialisation in Product Development and Manufacturing. The student can attend MOOC online lecture i.e. swayam program which is initiated by Government of India and appear for examination.

Department have state of the art infrastructure as per AICTE guidelines. It has 17 well equipped laboratories to provide practical exposure to students and also to conduct the various research activities. Our department have also got research grant from various research agencies like DST, AICTE, BRNS and Institute of Engineers. We have received 23.5 Lakhs rupees under DST Fast- track scheme, 18.2 lakhs under AICTE RPS scheme, 0.75 lakhs from Institute of Engineers, 51.6 lakhs from AICTE for laboratory development. Cumulatively department received research grant nearly about 1 crore in last five years.

Department also provides consultancy services in different areas like Vibration measurement, Dynamic balancing of machines, Material Testing, Metallurgical testing, Chemical Analysis, Pipe testing, Calibration work, Work on CNC and many more. Every year we provided consultancy service worth of about Rs 8 to 10 Lakh to different organisations.

The department also runs Professional students‟ chapters such as ASME, SAE, ASHRAE, ISHRAE. Various activities are being carried out through these chapters. Our students participate in many national/ state level competitions such as M-BAJA, E-BAJA, Efficycle, SUPRA and Go-kart etc. on yearly basis. Department also developed laboratory called �Learning Factory� to perform work related to these competitions and also other research activities. Students from our departments have formed association known as Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) to organise different events such as weekly club services, aptitude tests, Seminars by eminent personalities. Every year MESA organises state level technical symposium called VERTEX where all students come together and perform various activities. These activities intend over all development of all students by developing and improving various skills, technical knowledge, social awareness etc. Vertex comprised of technical events like LATHEMASTER, CADVENGERS, PREZENTO, INTELLECT, TECHFIELD, ARITHMATICO, CRAFTRADE etc.

The department has implemented the scheme under Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC). This scheme has enhanced the involvement of students and faculty members with industries. Through this scheme students and faculty members are providing technical support to the technological deficient MSMEs. Under this scheme department also receives monetary support about 12 lakhs per year from TIFAC. Internship from reputed industries such as DRDO, Cummins, HAL, John Deere, Blue Star, Siemens, Atlas Copco, Thermax etc. are offered to the postgraduate students. So student can join these companies and complete his/her dissertation work at respective industry.

Our students are placed in different reputed companies like Tata Motors, John Deere, Atlas Copco, Mahindra & Mahindra, Eaton India, L & T, Dassault Systems, Toyo Engineering, Fiat India, KSB Pumps and many more. Our students are placed in software companies like Infosys, TCS, Siemens, Cognizant and many more. Every year 100 % of our students are placed through campus placement program.

Every year our 3 to 4 students achieve All India Rank below 1000 in GATE Examination. Many of our students selected for higher education in many prestigious National/International Institute/universities like NIT, IIT, IISc, IIM.

Also our students are participating in GRE and TOFEL Examination. Every year 4 to 5 students are selected for M. S. program in foreign universities from countries like US, Germany and Australia.

We feel proud that our alumni occupy top executive positions at various enterprises such as ISRO, DRDO, Tata Motors, Bell Telecom, L&T, 3D PLM, HAL, Hero Moto Corp, Siemens, Mercedes, Infosys, Wipro and prestigious manufacturing and service organizations.
